Hiya, Stego!

Thanks for the info; I really thought the rubber pad could had something to do with the quick "driller hammer" movement

I already tried to order the belts from the online store. It was a hard job, having to translate each line by hand with Google translator. Unfortunately, I havn't got the email they said they would send with the account number where I should do the transfer, even thought they said they deliver to Spain. I don't know if I've missed something in the process or whatever... I'm in desperate need for a couple of new belts since I only have one and I have to swap them between two machines to test them, with the added risk of breaking it due to the tearing! I'm even looking for substitutes (maybe the standard, yellow rubber ones are ok? )

UPDATE: oh my god! Just thought of the "spam ashtray" of my email account... checked it and there I found the store messages!! I'm just making the payment now!

Some update about the FM404:

I also replaced the only two electrolytic capacitors in the Motoranschluss. No luck; just the same behaviour (remember, this PCB had also a BDX54A and its LM324N replaced, with no luck).

But I tried, for the 1st time, to test the playing functions without a tape loaded (I always took the previous tests with tape). I pressed the little switch, the tape slot went down... and the right motor rotates clockwise, while the left one rotates counterclockwise... Also the green "SPIELZ." title is turned on. And after 15 secs. or so, it stops with a "brake" noise. The red arrow pointing up on the "Band." button still all the time on, even when the motors stop. And the only button that is responding is the "Cass." one, which raises the tape slot again.

This don't happen when a tape is inserted (excepting the "Cass." button behaviour).

The FM 404 has (like the Grundig 2x4 super, No. 800/850/880) a 15-second time interval of the central processor. That means: After 15 seconds in "stop" position with no input from the control unit, the processor goes to "Standby", all motors stop and the breaking magnet will drop out - thats the noise, because without any cassette, both motors are turning fast.
With a tape loaded, the motors only transport the tape for a period of appr. 1-2 seconds, then the remaining time of the tape and the size of the cassette will be displayed (for example: "4-" and "0-.00" what means Cassette size VCC-480 (2x4 hours), remaining time 0:00 = Beginning of the tape).
After the 15 seconds, the display changes back to clock, if the clock is adjusted. If not, it changes to a blinking "88 8888".
In this 15 seconds, the tape is held in "stop" position only with the two reel motors, which have a identical torque depending to the position of the tape. After this 15 seconds, the reel motors get switched off and the magnet falls off.

If the tape drive does not thread in the tape, check the switches on the white plastic threading ring.

So far for the moment,
best regards,
stego

A quick update on this... I cheked the metal plate in the plastic ring... It shows some kind of wear, but I checked it with the multimeter and definitely it makes the proper contact, that is, is conducting!
